123SingaporewasoriginallyknownasTemasek,whichmeansSeaTownintheJavaneselanguage.ItwaspartoftheSrivijayaEmpireinthe8thcentury,apowerfulmaritimekingdomcenteredinSumatra.TemasekwaslaterrenamedasSingapore,derivedfromtheSanskritwordSingapura,meaningCityoftheLion.AncientSingapore
Duringthecolonialperiod,Singaporeexperiencedrapideconomicgrowthanddevelopment,attractingimmigrantsfromvariouspartsofAsia.In1819,SirStamfordRaffles,aBritishstatesman,arrivedinSingaporeandnegotiatedatreatywiththeSultanofJohortoestablishatradingpostontheisland.SingaporebecameaBritishcolonyin1824andservedasavitalentrepotfortradebetweenEuropeandAsia,aswellasastrategicmilitarybaseinSoutheastAsia.ColonialPeriod010203
WorldWarIIandPost-WarPeriod010203SingaporefelltotheJapaneseduringWorldWarIIandwasoccupiedfrom1942to1945.Afterthewar,Britishcolonialrulewasrestoreduntil1959whenSingaporeachievedself-governmentasastatewithintheBritishEmpire.In1963,SingaporejoinedtheMalaysianfederationbutseparatedin1965tobeeanindependentrepublic.
Sinceindependence,Singaporehasbeeoneofthemostprosperouscountriesintheworld,withastrongeconomybasedonfinance,manufacturing,andinternationaltrade.Thegovernmenthasimplementedvariouspoliciestoattractforeigninvestmentsandtalent,transformingSingaporeintoaglobalcityandaleadingfinancialcenterinAsia.Singaporealsopridesitselfonitsefficientpublictransportationsystem,excellenthealthcarefacilities,andtop-notcheducationinstitutions.ModernSingapore
