3.1CouplersAdirectioncouplerAdirectionalcouplerisusedtocombineandsplitsignalsinanopticalnetwork.A2x2couplerconsistsoftwoinputportsandoutputports.Construction:fusetwofiberstogetherinthemiddle;usewaveguidesinintegratedoptics.3

3.1CouplersAcouplercanbeusedasapowersplitterifthecouplinglengthlisadjustedsuchthathalfthepowerfromeachinputappearsateachoutput.Suchcoupleriscalleda3-dBcoupler.Couplersarealsousedtotapoffasmallportionofthepowerfromalightstreamformonitoringpurposesorotherreasons.Couplersarethebuildingblocksforseveralotheropticaldevices.Wewillexploretheuseof3-dBdirectionalcouplerstoconstructopticalswitched.CouplersarealsotheprinciplecomponentsusedtoconstructMach-Zehnderinterferometers,whichcanbeusedasopticalfiltersandmultiplexers/demultiplexers.4

3.2IsolatorsandCirculatorsCouplersandmostotherpassiveopticaldevicesarereciprocaldevices,inthatthedevicesworkexactlythesamewayiftheirinputsandoutputsarereversed.However,inmanysystemsthereisaneedforapassivenonreciprocaldevice.Anisolatorisanexampleofsuchadevice.Itsmainfunctionistoallowtransmissioninonedirectionthroughitbutblockalltransmissionintheotherdirection.Isolatorsareusedinsystemsinfrontofopticalamplifiersandlasersprimarilytopreventreflectionsfromenteringthesedevices,whichwouldotherwisedegradetheirperformance.Thetwokeyparameters:insertionlossisolationisaround1dB.is
