Theeconomicintegrationunderthebackgroundofglobalizationhasbroughtaboutprofoundchangesintheworldeconomy.Onesignificantmanifestationistherapidgrowthofinternationaltrade.AccordingtotheWorldTradeOrganization(WTO),globalmerchandisetradevolumehasincreasedbyanaverageof4.7%annuallyoverthepasttwodecades,reachingarecordhighof$21.4trillionin2021.Thisgrowthislargelyattributedtothereductionoftradebarriersandtheenhancementofeconomiccooperationamongcountries.Forinstance,theestablishmentoftheEuropeanUnion(EU)hasledtoasignificantreductionintariffsandtradebarriersamongmemberstates,promotingtheflowofgoodsandserviceswithintheregion.
Theexpansionofmultinationalcorporations(MNCs)isanothercrucialaspectofeconomicintegration.MNCsnowoperateinalmosteverycountryintheworld,utilizingglobalsupplychainstoproduceanddistributeproducts.AccordingtoareportbytheUnitedNationsConferenceonTradeandDevelopment(UNCTAD),therewereapproximately86,000MNCsworldwidein2020,employingaround200millionpeople.Thesecompaniesnotonlycreatejobopportunitiesbutalsotransfertechnologyandknowledgeacrossborders,fosteringeconomicdevelopmentinhostcountries.AnotableexampleisthesuccessofAppleInc.,whichhasestablishednumerousmanufacturingplantsinChina,contributingsignificantlytothecountryseconomicgrowthandtechnologicaladvancement.
Moreover,globalizationhasfacilitatedtheintegrationoffinancialmarkets.Theeaseofcross-bordercapitalflowshasallowedfortheefficientallocationofresourcesandthereductionofborrowingcostsforbusinessesandgovernments.AccordingtotheBankforInternationalSettlements(BIS),theglobalstockofcross-borderbankingclaimsreached$44.8trillionin2019,a12%increasefrom2018.Thistrendhasbeenfurtheracceleratedbyadvancementsinfinancialtechnologyandtheincreasinguseofdigitalpayments.Oneprominentcaseistheriseoffintechcompanies,suchasAlipayandWeChatPay,whichhaverevolutionizedthepaymentlandscapeinChinaandbeyond,makingfinancialtransactionsmoreaccessibleandconvenientforconsumersandbusinessesalike.
