Alice’sAdventuresinWonderland

“Theresnouseinknocking,”saidtheFootman,“andthatfortworeasons.First,becauseImonthesamesideofthedoorasyouare;secondly,becausetheyremakingsuchanoiseinside,noonecouldpossiblyhearyou.”Andcertainlytherewasamostextraordinarynoisegoingonwithin,andeverynowandthenagreatcrash,asifadishhadbeenbrokentopieces.
“Please,then,”saidAlice,“howamItogetin?”
“Theremightbesomesenseinyourknocking,”theFootmanwentonwithoutattendingto(关注)her,“ifwehadthedoorbetweenus.Forinstance,ifyouwereinside,youmightknock,andIcouldletyouout,youknow.”Hewaslookingupintotheskyallthetimehewasspeaking,andthisAlicethoughtdecidedlyrude.“Butperhapshecanthelpit,”shesaidtoherself,“hiseyesaresoverynearlyatthetopofhishead.Butatanyrate(无论如何)hemightanswerquestions.”“HowamItogetin?”sherepeated,aloud.
“Ishallsithere,”theFootmanremarked(说),“tilltomorrow—”
Atthismomentthedoorofthehouseopened,andalargeplatecameflyingout,straightattheFootmanshead:itjustgrazed(擦破)hisnose,andbroketopiecesagainstoneofthetreesbehindhim.
“—ornextday,maybe,”theFootmancontinuedinthesametone,exactlyasifnothinghadhappened.
“HowamItogetin?”askedAliceagain,inaloudertone.
“Areyoutogetinatall?”saidtheFootman.“Thatsthefirstquestion,youknow.”
Itwas,nodoubt:onlyAlicedidnotliketobetoldso.
TheFootmanseemedtothinkthisagoodopportunityforrepeatinghisremark.“Ishallsithere,”hesaid,“onandoff,fordaysanddays.”
“ButwhatamItodo?”saidAlice.
“Anythingyoulike,”saidtheFootman,andbeganwhistling(吹口哨).
