TheMogaoGrottoes(莫高窟)wereacenterofBuddhistlifeandsomeoftheworld’sgreatculturesforhundredsofyears.However,bythelateQingDynastytheyhadbeenabandoned(废弃)andnearlyforgottenandmanyofthecaveshadbecomedamagedbytheweather.Around1900,withthediscoveryofalibraryofthousandsofancientdocuments,thecavesreceivednewinterestfromChineseandforeignresearchers.Unluckily,thisresultedintensofthousandsofitemsfromthecavesbeingtakentoforeignmuseums.

Inthe1940s,manyresearchersandartistsvisitedtheareatostudytraditionalChineseart.CopiesofsomeoftheartworkpaintedbyrespectedartistssuchasZhangDaqianandGuanShanyuehelpedpeoplealloverthecountrylearnaboutDunhuang.Theseartistswerealsoinspiredbytheartworktheysawinthecavesanditbegantoinfluencetheirpaintingstyles.Othersstayedinthedesertformuchlonger.ChangShuhongstayedfortherestofhislife—strugglingtorecordtheculturaltreasuresandprotectthemfromtheweather.Asaresultoftheirefforts,theDunhuangAcademywasformedtoprotectandstudytheMogaoGrottoes.

In1987,theMogaoGrottoeswerenamedaUNESCOWorldHeritageSite.Whilethecavesareopentothepublic,access(权限)isnowlimitedinordertoprotecttheartwork.However,thecavescanbeseenonlineindigitalversions(数码版)sothatpeoplearoundtheworldcanstudyandenjoythem.

Thoughitisremote,theMogaoGrottoescontinuetodrawvisitors.Andjustasthesandanddeserthavesurvivedlargelyunchangedthroughthecenturies,thissmallartgalleryinthedeserthasalsosurvivedlargelyunchangedprovidinganamazinglookataworldlongagopast.
