Thetypeofdryerchosenforanygivenapplicationdependsonboththefeedpropertiesand

productrequirements.Importantfeedpropertiesarethemoisturecontent,solids,viscosity,and

density,asweasanyvolatile,flammable,ortoxiccomponents.Driedproductspecificationsmay

includeaverageparticlesizeandparticlesizedistribution,density,moisturecontent,andresidua

volatilesorsolvents.Powdercharacteristicscanbecontroedandpowderpropertiesmaintained

constantthroughcontinuousoperation.

Spraydryingisathree-stepdryingprocessinvolvingbothparticleformationanddrying.(1)The

processbeginswiththeatomizationofaliquidfeedintoasprayoffinedroplets.(2)Thenaheated

gasstreamsuspendsthedroplets,evaporatingtheliquidandleavingthesolidsinessentiaytheir

originalsizeandshape.(3)Finay,thedriedpowderisseparatedfromthegasstreamand

coected.Spentdryinggasiseithertreatedandexhaustedtotheatmosphereorrecirculatedtothe

system.Thesethreestepsareaccomplishedbythreecomponents:theatomizer,thedisperser,and

thedryingchamber.

Theselectionandoperationoftheatomizerisofextremeimportanceinachievinganoptimum

operationandproductionoftop-qualitypowders.Therearefourmaintypesofatomization:

Centrifugalatomization,themostcommon,usesarotatingwheelordisctobreakthe

liquidstreamintodroplets.Therotationalspeeddeterminesthemeanparticlesize,whilethe
