ThelaughingKookaburraisoneoftheiconicbirdsinAustralia.ItisakindoffisheaterofKingfisherfamily.Itisnamedafteritssoundlikelaughter.Becauseitssongcanbeheardintheearlymorningorsunset,itisknownastheclockofforestresidents.ItwasonceusedasamascotintheSydneyOlympicGames.

ThekookaburraisacommonbirdinthecountrysideofAustralia.Likekangaroo,Australianpeopleloveitverymuch.Therefore,theimageofKookaburraappearsonallkindsofculturalgoods.ThemostfamousoneisthecommemorativesilvercoinissuedbyPerthMintinAustralia.OnthefrontistheheadofQueenElizabethII,andonthebackisakookaburrawithindependentbranches,Thiscommemorativecoinhasbeenissuedannuallysince1990.

Bodylength42-46cm,mouthlength8-10cm,weight500g,averagelifespan15years.Unlikemostotherspeciesofkingfisher,theyonlydependonfishingforaliving.Inadditiontofish,theyalsopreyonmice,frogs,lizards,crayfish,snailsandinsects.ThebiggestfeatureofKingfisheristhatitcanpreyonsnakesandotherreptilesmuchlargerthanitself.Itisfamousforitsabilitytocatchsnakes.Itsabilitytocatchsnakesisveryhigh.AnadultKingfishercaneasilykillrattlesnakes,snailsandinsectsLargesnakes,suchasthetaipansnake,alsoattacklargerlizardsingroups.

Theyarenotafraidofhumanbeings.Theyoftenliveindenselypopulatedareas,andtheyareboldandgreedy.Aftereatingthefoodpeoplegivethem,theywillhangonandstopatthesameplacetoGagaandgiggle.Whenthefeederwalksaway,theywillflywiththem.Theywillflyslowlyuntiltheyarefull.

Ithasawiderangeofdistribution,isnotclosetothecriticalvalueofspeciessurvival,andthepopulationtrendisstable.Itisevaluatedasaspecieswithoutsurvivalcrisis.
