Mostsatellites(卫星)todayaresentintoEarth’sloworbit(离地表较近的轨道),whichreachesuptoaround2,000kilometersabovetheEarth.There,spacecraftaremostlikelytocrashwitheachother.Theremaybeasmanyas170millionpiecesofspacejunkinorbit,accordingtotheESA.Bigorsmall,anyofthepiecescancauseharmtoaspacecraft.Forexample,ifanobjectaslargeas10centimeterscrasheswithasatellite,thesatellitewillbreakapart.

Intermsofthecleanup,scientistshavesomeotherideas.Onepopularplanistosendaspacecraftcarryingharpoons(鱼叉)andmagnets(磁铁).Thecraftwouldshoottheharpoontostickintothedebrisbefore“throwing”itbacktoEarth.Magnetscouldmovethedebris,changingitsdirection.ThedebriswouldburnafterenteringEarth’satmosphere(大气层)sotherewouldn’tbemuchleftwhenitreachesEarth.Scientistsarealsoconsideringshootinglasers(激光)fromspacecrafttoheatupthedebris’surface,creatingasmallpushthatwouldalterthedebris’orbit.ThischangewouldallowthedebristobecapturedbyEarth’sgravity(重力).
