LifeandWorksPhilipArthurLarkin(1922–1985)borninCoventryintheEnglishmidlandsHeattendedschoolthereandafterthatwenttoOxford,wherehewasassociatedwiththewritersof“theMovement”,agroupofyoungpoetsandnovelistswhorejectedtheprevailingfashionforwritinginthestyleofYeatsandDylanThomas.Heworkedinlibrarieshisentirelife,inShropshireandLeicester,andthenatQueen’sCollegeinBelfast,andfinallyattheUniversityofHull.Chapter35PhilipArthurLarkin

Larkinhadprovedtobeoneofthebestpoetsof“theMovement”,whilehisbestpoemscontinuedthetraditionassociatedwithThomasHardy.Hisstyleismodernandprecise,andheiswidelyregardedasoneofthegreatEnglishpoetsduringthelatterhalfofthe20thcentury.Hisfirstbookofpoetry,TheNorthShip,waspublishedin1945,followedbytwonovels,JillandAGirlinWinter,buthecametoprominencein1955withthepublicationofhissecondcollectionofpoems,TheLessDeceived,followedbyTheWhitsunWeddingsandHighWindows.HereceivedmanyhonoursincludingtheQueen’sGoldMedalforPoetry.Hewasoffered,butdeclined,thepositionofPoetLaureatein1984,followingthedeathofJohnBetjeman.LifeandWorksChapter35PhilipArthurLarkin

HispoemsaremarkedbyaveryEnglish,glumaccuracyaboutemotions,placesandrelationships,andaredescribedasloweredsightsanddiminishedexpectations.LarkinhimselfsaidthatdeprivationforhimwaswhatdaffodilswereforWordsworth.InfluencedbyW.H.Auden,W.B.YeatsandThomasHardy,hispoemsarehighlystructuredbutflexibleverseforms.Nootherpoetpresentsthewelfare-stateworldofpostimperialBritainsovividly,sounsparinglyandsotenderly.Larkinemployedthetraditionaltoolsofpoetry—rhyme,stanzaandmetre—toexploretheoftenuncomfortableorterrifyinge
