Schematheory,originallybelongingtothefieldofpsychology,hasbeenapplied

incross-culturalcommunicationresearchsincethe1990s.Itsapplicationinforeign

languagereadingcomprehensionhasalsobeenfrequentlystudied.However,thereis

stillalotofroomforschematheoryinformedresearchoninterpreting.Incompleting

thisinterpretingtaskinmedicalfield,theauthorfoundthatwhileaninterpreters

existingschemasareimportant,it’sstillnecessarytoundertakesufficientpre-task

preparationtobuildnewschemas,particularlywhendealingwithhighlyspecialized

topics.

ThisstudyisbasedonthesimulatedconsecutiveinterpretingofaspeechbyDr

MatthewNortonfromtheAlzheimersResearchUK.Throughcaseanalysis,it

exploreshowtheschemabuildingduringthepre-taskpreparationofmedicaltopic

caninfluencethethreestagesofinterpretingprocess:listeningcomprehension,

memory,andlanguageoutput.Italsoexamineshowschemasareactivatedinthese

threestages,therebyeliminatingambiguityinlisteningcomprehension,predicting

context,simplifyingnote-takingandreducingpsychologicalstressinmemory,and

assistinginwordselectionandquickresponseinthelanguageoutputprocess.This

reportaimstoprovideinsightsintofutureinterpretingtrainingandpractice.
