Chapter6GeorgeGordonByronLifeandWorksGeorgeGordonByron(1788–1824)wasbornintoanaristocraticbutimpoverishedfamily.Atnineteen,hepublishedavolumeofpoemsentitledHoursofIdleness,butwasridiculedbyacriticintheEdinburghReview.HetookhisrevengebypublishingEnglishBardsandScotchReviewers.Inthispoemheattackednotonlyhisenemies,thecritics,butalsonearlyallliterarycelebritiesofhisday.In1809hewenttotravelinEuropeandAsiaMinor,visitingMalta,GreeceandtheNearEast.HewrotethefirsttwocantosofChildeHarold’sPilgrimage.Onhistourhedidmanythings,somegoodandkind,someromanticandlovely.

LifeandWorksByroncreatedatypeofherocalledByronichero.AByronicheroisahandsomeyoungmanwhomaintainsanattitudeofprideandcynicism.TheByronicheroconcealshisinnermiserybehindacarelessfacade.ManyofByron’sreadersequatedByronwiththecharactershecreated.HeleftEnglandonApril25,1816,andwouldneverseeEnglandagain.HespenttherestofhisyearsinSwitzerlandandItaly.Tothisperiodbelonghismostimportantworks,thelatercantosofChildeHarold’sPilgrimage,thedramaticworkssuchasManfredandCain,andhissatiricmasterpiece,DonJuan.In1824hewenttoGreeceasaleaderoftherevolutionaryforcesagainstthetyrannyoftheSultan.Hediedfromafever.Chapter6GeorgeGordonByron
