Chapter3LifeandWorksSinclairLewis(1885–1951)anovelist,shortstorywriter,andplaywrightofthe20thcentury.HebecamethefirstAmericanwritertobeawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1930.Lewis’childhoodwasfilledwithpainandloneliness.Hewasconsideredasawackykidandlaughedatbytheothers.Aftergraduation,Lewismovedfromjobtojobandfromplacetoplaceinanefforttomakeendsmeet.Hewasforatimeareporterandalsoworkedasaneditorforseveralpublishers.Chapter7SinclairLewis

Chapter3LifeandWorksIn1920LewisachievedhisfirstgreatsuccesswiththepublicationofMainStreet.In1922,LewispublishedBabbitt,anovelthatsatirizedtheAmericancommercialcultureandboosterism.Lewiscontinuedhissuccessinthe1920swithArrowsmith(1925),whichtoldastoryaboutthechallengesfacedbyanidealisticdoctor.ItwasawardedthePulitzerPrize(whichLewisrefused)andwasonceadaptedasafilmin1931.TheliterarycareerofLewiswasgenerallydividedintothreestages.Thefirststage(1910–1919)canbecalledthetrainingperiod.Mostoftheworksinthisperiodfollowedtheoldconvention.Thesecondstage(1920–1930)canbecalledthefloweringperiod.Duringthistime,hisstatusinAmericanliteraturewasestablished.Thethirdstage(1931–1
