Background

Voluntarymedicalmalecircumcision(VMMC)hasbeenacornerstoneofHIVpreventionefforts,incountrieswithhighHIVprevalenceandlowcircumcisionrates.ModelingstudiesoverthepastdecadehavedemonstratedthatVMMCsignificantlyreducestheriskofHIVacquisitionandisacost-effectivestrategyforcontrollingtheHIVepidemic.

Inrecentyears,discussionssurroundingVMMCsroleintheevolvingHIVpreventionlandscapehaveintensified.Questionsregardingitslong-termcost-effectiveness,sustainability,andintegrationwithnewHIVpreventiontoolshaveemerged.Inresponse,AvenirHealth,withsupportfromtheBillandMelindaGatesFoundation,hasconductedadvancedmodelingworkinselectedhigh-burdencountriestoassesstheimpactandfutureroleofVMMCwithinthebroaderHIVpreventionframework.
