TheRenaissanceisanintellectualmovement,ortherebirthofletters.ItsprangfirstinItalyinthe14thcenturyandgraduallyspreadalloverEurope.Thefirststrikingfeatureofthismovementisthethirstingcuriositytotheclassicalliterature.Oldmanuscriptsweredugout.TherearoseageneralrevivalofthestudyofGreekandLatinauthors.Anotherfeatureisthekeeninterestinlifeandhumanactivities.PeopleceasedtolookuponthemselvesaslivingonlyforGodandafutureworld.;Thinkers,artistsandpoetsarosetothenewfeelingofadmirationforhumanbeautyandhumanachievement.HencearosethethoughtofHumanism.

HumanismisthekeynoteoftheRenaissance.Itisabeliefsystembasedontheprinciplethatpeople’sspiritualandemotionalneedscanbefulfilledwithoutfollowingareligion.Humanismreflectedthenewoutlookoftherisingbourgeoisclass.ThegreatestoftheEnglishhumanistswasThomasMore,theauthorofUtopia.
