shortestlongintroduction?Thequestionsare,ofcourse,rhetoricalhighlightingthe
puzzlementthatsurroundsattemptstodrawboundariestotheapplicationofvague
termslike‘rare’,‘common’,‘short’and‘long’.
Inaworldofchange,weseespeciesgofromcommontorareandyetareunable
topointtoanymomentatwhichtheyceasedtobecommon.Weseepeoplegrowold
andyetcannotnominateanymomentatwhichtheyceasedtobeyoung,andwesee
societiesbecomeunjustandyetcannotnominateanymomentatwhichtheyceased
tobejust.Nonetheless,transitionslikethesesurelymustoccuratsomepoint,ifat
all.Theremustbeachangesomewherebutnoparticularpointcanbesingledoutas
thepointofchange.Wherethenarewetodrawtheline?
