However,inmodernnetworksthecostoftransmissionandequipmentislowerand,althoughhierarchiesstillexist,theyaremuchflatter,withperhapsonlytwolayers.

Asdescribedabove,mostautomatedtelephoneexchangesnowusedigitalswitchingratherthanmechanicaloranalogswitching.Thetrunksconnectingtheexchangesarealsodigital,calledcircuitsorchannels.Howeveranalogtwo-wirecircuitsarestillusedtoconnectthelastmilefromtheexchangetothetelephoneinthehome(alsocalledthelocalloop).Tocarryatypicalphonecallfromacallingpartytoacalledparty,theanalogaudiosignalisdigitizedatan8kHzsampleratewith8-bitresolutionusingaspecialtypeofnonlinearpulsecodemodulation(PCM)knownasG.711.Thecallisthentransmittedfromoneendtoanotherviatelephoneexchanges.
