    ReadingANearthesmallvillageofMaiAdrashainEthiopia,UCLAarchaeologistsfoundthemselvesdiggingintomorethandirt.Theywerealsodivingintoanotherrole,servingasambassadorsofhistorytohelpthelocalcommunityunderstandthatthereiswealthnotonlyinthenaturalgold-richsoilthatencloseslong-buriedancientruins,butalsoinpreservationofculturalheritage.“WedecideditwasreallyworthwhiletokeepthissitesowespentalotoftimethisseasontalkingtopeoplewholivearoundMaiAdrasha,”saidWillekeWendrich,directoroftheCotsenInstituteandprofessorofEgyptianarchaeologyanddigitalhumanities,whohasleddigsintheareaforthelasttwoyears.12

    ReadingATheresultsoftheireffortswereheartening—forarchaeologyasawholeandfortheUCLAteaminparticular.Wendrich,herco-directorandgraduatestudentRachelMoyandtheirteamrecentlyreturnedfromtheirsecondexcavationnearMaiAdrasha,intheregionofnorthernEthiopiacalledShire.Withseveralactivetrenches,theyarelookingforevidencefromthepre-Aksumiteera(before300B.C.),aperiodthatremainssomethingofanarchaeologicalmystery,partiallybecausetheremainsofitaredisappearingasaresultofhumanshuntingforgold.34

    ReadingAMaiAdrasha,likemostvillagesintheregion,isimpoverished.Locals,aswellaspeoplefromequallypoorvillagesfartheraway,havedugintotheearth,panningforthetinyflakesofgoldthatcanbefoundinthesoil.Intheprocess,theyhavedismantledmuchofwhatinotherpartsofEthiopiahasbeenpreservedasattractivetouristdestinations.InplaceslikeAksum,oneoftheoldestcontinuouslyinhabitedplacesinAfrica,well-preserved,excavatedwallsandartifactsilluminatetheancientpastandcontributetothelocaleconomy.5
