ReadingAForcenturies,InuithuntersnavigatedtheArcticbyconsultingwind,snowandsky.NowtheyuseGPS.SpeakersoftheaboriginallanguageGurindji,innorthernAustralia,usedtocommand28variantsofeachcardinaldirection.Childrentherenowusethefourbasicterms,andtheydon’tusethemverywell.InthearidheightsoftheAndes,theAymaradevelopedanunusualwayofunderstandingtime,imaginingthepastasinfrontofthem,andthefutureattheirbacks.ButfortheyoungestgenerationofAymaraspeakers—increasinglyinfluencedbySpanish—thefutureliesahead.1
