BackgroundinformationVincentWillemvanGogh(30March1853–29July1890)wasaDutchPost-ImpressionistpainterwhoposthumouslybecameoneofthemostfamousandinfluentialfiguresinWesternarthistory.Inadecade,hecreatedabout2,100artworks,includingaround860oilpaintings,mostofwhichdatefromthelasttwoyearsofhislife.Theyincludelandscapes,stilllifes,portraits,andself-portraits,andarecharacterisedbyboldcoloursanddramatic,impulsiveandexpressivebrushworkthatcontributedtothefoundationsofmodernart.Notcommerciallysuccessful,hestruggledwithseveredepressionandpoverty,eventuallyleadingtohissuicideatagethirty-seven.
