man,Mr.ewis,wateringtheplants.Hismovementswereslowandcautiousasthough

eachdropofwaterwereagifttothesoil.Gatheringhercourage,Maggieapproached

himandasked,Excuseme,canIhelpyoutakecareofthegarden?Mr.ewislooked

surprisedatfirst,butthenawarmsmilespreadacrosshisface.Ofcourse,hesaid,

handingherasmallwateringcan.Maggiesheartleaptwithjoy.

Fromthatdayon,Maggievisitedthegardeneveryafternoon.Mr.ewisbecame

hermentor,patientlyteachingherhowtoplantseeds,cutbushesandremoveweeds.

Heshowedherhowtocarefordifferentplants,explainingwhichonesneededmore

sunlightandwhichonesgrewbetterintheshade.Maggiequicklyfellinlovewithher

newrole.Theoncesmallactofwateringturnedintoapassionandsheeagerlyabsorbed

everybitofknowledgeMr.ewisshared.Soon,shewasplantingherownlittlesection

inthegarden,watchingwithprideastinygreensprouts（嫩芽）pushedthroughthesoil.

Oneday,however,Maggienoticedthatsomeplantswerestartingtowilt（枯萎）.

Heartsinking,shewalkeduptoMr.ewisandinquiredaboutit.Mr.ewisletouta

deep,heavysighandthenexplained,“Thegardenisnowshortonfunds.Without

moneyfbrwater,seedsandtools,itwillhavetoclose.Atthismoment,Maggiefeltas

ifherheartw
