AbstractTheEarlyEmsianEvent(E’EmEvent),themostsignificantbio-eventforChinese
Devonianvertebrates,hassignificantlyimpactedonthediversityofgaleaspids.Theendemic
GaleaspidaalmostbecameextinctaftertheMid-EmsianEvent(M’EmEvent).Onlyfewgaleaspid
taxasurvivedfromtheseevents,suchasClarorbisapponomedianusfromtheEifelianofGuangxi,
SouthChina,andanindeterminategaleaspidfromtheFrasnianofNingxia,NorthwestChina.
Here,wereportthefirstMiddleDevoniangaleaspid,Dongfangaspissp.,fromtheHaikou
FormationinWuding,YunnanProvince.Thenewmaterialismoresuggestiveofthetypespecies
ofDongfangaspis,D.major,thanLaxaspisandPolybranchiaspisinitssuborbicularheadshield
withsmallinnercornualprocess,broadandnearlyaequilateventralrim,andabout45pairsof
branchialfossae.Dongfangaspisbearsthelargestnumberofbranchialfossaeeverrecordedin
galeaspids,whichprobabl
