    havinganimpactonourworldinmanydifferentways.Worldwidecompetitiontoreapitsbenefits

    isfierce,andgloballeaders–theUSandAsia–haveemergedonthescene.

    AIisseenbymanyasanengineofproductivityandeconomicgrowth.Itcanincreasetheefficiency

    withwhichthingsaredoneandvastlyimprovethedecision-makingprocessbyanalysinglarge

    amountsofdata.Itcanalsospawnthecreationofnewproductsandservices,marketsand

    industries,therebyboostingconsumerdemandandgeneratingnewrevenuestreams.

    However,AImayalsohaveahighlydisruptiveeffectontheeconomyandsociety.Somewarnthat

    itcouldleadtothecreationofsuperfirms–hubsofwealthandknowledge–thatcouldhave

    detrimentaleffectsonthewidereconomy.Itmayalsowidenthegapbetweendevelopedand

    developingcountries,andboosttheneedforworkerswithcertainskillswhilerenderingothers

    redundant;thislattertrendcouldhavefar-reachingconsequencesforthelabourmarket.Experts

    alsowarnofitspotentialtoincreaseinequality,pushdownwagesandshrinkthetaxbase.

    Whiletheseconcernsremainvalid,thereisnoconsensusonwhetherandtowhatextenttherelated

    riskswillmaterialise.Theyarenotagiven,andcarefullydesignedpolicywouldbeabletofosterthe

    developmentofAIwhilekeepingthenegativeeffectsincheck.TheEUhasapotentialtoimprove

    itsstandinginglobalcompetitionanddirectAIontoapaththatbenefitsitseconomyandcitizens.
