wenttoSpainin1936totreatthewoundedsoldiersduringthewarthere.Hesoonrealisedthatmanypeopleweredyingbecausetheydidnotgettohospitalquicklyenough.DrBethunedevelopednewwaysoftakingcareofthesick.Heinventedspecialmedicaltoolstouseoutsidehospitalsandclosetothefightingareassothatdoctorscouldtreatthewoundedmorequickly.Hisinventionssavedmanylives.;

In1938,DrBethunecametoChinaandhelpedtreatthewoundedduringthe

Anti-JapaneseWar.Atthattime,therewerefewdoctors,sohehadtoworkveryhardonhisown.HisexperienceoftreatingpeopleinSpainwasusefulinChina.Hedevelopedtrainingcoursesforlocaldoctorsandnurses,andwrotebookssothattheycouldlearnabouthowhetreatedthesick.

Once,heevenworkedforsixty-ninehourswithoutstoppingandmanagedtosaveoverahundredlives.Onedayin1939,hecuthisfingerduringanoperation,buthecontinuedhisworkwithouttreatingit.Intheend,hediedofhiswound.
