    Fourbillionyearsago,Earthiscontinentsbegantakingshape.Scientists

    longheldthatthisprocessunfoldedgradually.Itwouldhavetakenmillions

    ofyearsforgranite,theprimarycomponentofthecontinentalcrust,toform

    inthemantleandmigratetotheuppercrust,theyreasoned.Butnew

    researchsueststhattheseeventsmayhaveproceededatratheradifferent

    pace.AccordingtoareportpublishedtodayinthejournalNature,the

    emergenceofgraniteoccurredbywayofswift,dynamicandpossibly

    catastrophiceventslastingfrom1,000to100,000years.

    GeologistAlexanderCrudenoftheUniversityofTorontoandhiscolleagues

    turnedtoexperimentalstudiesimeltingrocksamples,forexampleito

    explorehowgranitemagmaformsandhowfastitcanmove.Theirresults

    provedsurprising.Inthepastwethoughtthatgranitemagmaiwhichcools

    andcrystallizestoformverylargegraniteintrusions扭movedupthrough

    kilometersofcrustaslarge,solidblobsatratesofaboutameterperyear,

    Crudensays.Butweivefoundthatmagmaactuallyhasquitelowviscosity

    andisrelativelyrunny.Becauseitisrunny,itisabletochannelitswayfrom

    themantleandlowercrustthroughfracturesandcracksthatareassmallas

    onemeterthick.Thisway,themagmacanascend20to30kilometersinto

    theuppercrustquiterapidly.Infact,Crudencomparestheprocessto

    subterraneanvolcaniceruptions.Overtimetheseshort,quickburstsof
