Yetsometimesthewritershavegotitwrong.Nobodypredictedtheemergenceofpersonalcomputers,forinstance.Andcontactwithalienbeingsfromotherplanetsstillseemsalongwayoff,despitebeingacommonsubjectofsciencefiction.

Overtheyears,thetimebetweenthepredictionofnewtechnologyinsciencefictionanditsactualdiscoveryhasbecomeshorter.Ittook100yearsbeforethemoonlandingspredictedbytheFrenchwriterJulesVerneactuallytookplace.Theideaofrobotsfirstemergedinthe1920s.Thefirstwasbuiltinthe1970s.Andinthe1940s,ArthurClarkepredictedthatcommunicationssatelliteswouldcircletheglobebytheyear2000.Theyarrived30yearsbeforetheyweredue.
