(2024福建龙岩质检)AstheclocksstrikemidnightonebyoneonNewYearsEve,onesongwillringoutmorethananyotherfromtheworldscrowds—AuldLangSyne,theScots-languageode(颂歌)tofriendshipandgoodtimespast,whichwasfirstsettopaperbytheScottishpoetRobertBurns,thoughheclaimedhewasnotitsoriginalauthor,onlyadocumentarianofonepartofanoldoralfolktradition.AccordingtohistorianDrMoragGrant,theconceptof“auldlangsyne”wasonceaJacobitetradition.

BurnsversionquicklybecamepopularinScotlandafteritwaspublishedin1799,andthankstothatScottishdiaspora—whichcarrieditsfolktraditionstoplacesliketheStates,CanadaandNewZealand—snatches(音乐片段)ofAuldLangSyneareproductivethroughouthistory.

Itwasin19th-centuryEnglandthattheNewYearsEvetraditionemerged.AtStPaulsinLondon,ScottswhowentabroadwouldgathertogetherandbeltoutthewordstoAuldLangSyne.“TomissitintheeyesofsomeScotswouldamounttolittlelessthanacrime，”theEdinburghEveningCourantwroteatthetime.

Anincreasinglyconnectedworldhelpedtopromotethesongsspread.Theinventorofthetelephone,AlexanderGrahamBell,sangitdownthemouthpiecetodemonstratethenewtelecommunicationsequipment.Later,anotherscientistcalledEmileBerlinerchoseitasoneofthefirstsongstoberecordedonthegramophone.In1929,thebandleaderGuyLombardobeganthetraditionofplayingAuldLangSynefromTimesSquare,firstonradioandthenontelevision.

Fromitsfolkloricbeginnings,AuldLangSynehastravelledfar,shapeshiftingandacquiringnewmeaningasitpassesbetweenpeopleandcultures.Today,itsymbolizesfriendshipandfondmemoryforcommunitiesacrosstheglobe,anditbecomesthesecondmostsungsongintheEnglishlanguage,beatenonlybyHappyBirthday.ItsquiteasuccessforapoemwritteninaScottishminoritylanguage.
