Tharsisbulge,anenormousgeologicareanearMars’sequator.NorthwestofTharsisisthelargestvolcano
ofall:OlympusMons,withaheightof25kilometersandmeasuringsome700kilometersindiameteratitsbase.
ThethreelargevolcanoesontheTharsisbulgearealittlesmaller-a“mere”18kilometershigh.
NoneofthesevolcanoeswasformedasaresultofcollisionsweentesoftheMartiancrust-there
isnotemotiononMars.Instead,theyareshieldvolcanoes—volcanoeswithbroad,slopingslides
formedbymoltenrock.Allfourshowdistinctivelavachannelsandotherflowfeaturessimilartothosefound
onshieldvolcanoesonEarth.ImagesoftheMartiansurfacerevealmanyhundredsofvolcanoes.Mostof
thelargestvolcanoesareassociatedwiththeTharsisbulge,butmanysmalleronesarefoundinthe
northernins.
ThegreatheightofMartianvolcanoesisadirectconsequenceofthenet’slowsurfacegravity.As
lavaflowsandspreadstoformashieldvolcano,thevolcano’seventualheightdependsonthenew
mountain’sabilitytosupportitsownweight.Thelowerthegravity,thesertheweightandthegreatertheheight
ofthemountain.ItisnoaccidentthatMaxwellMonsonVenusandtheHawaiianshieldvolcanoesonEarthrise
toaboutthesameheight(about10kilometers)abovetheirrespectivebases-Earth
