Abstract

BackgroundMethyljasmonate(MeJA)isaneffectiveplantelicitorthatenhancessecondarymetabolism.Chinese

chivesareprizedfortheirpungentflavor,yetthebiosyntheticpathwaysandregulatorymechanismsofflavor

compoundsinducedbyMeJAremainunclear.

MethodologyThisstudyintegratedmetabolomicandtranscriptomicanalysestoelucidatehowMeJAmodulates

thebiosynthesisofflavorsubstanceprecursorsinsoilless-cultivatedChinesechives.

ResultsMeJAtreatmentimprovedthedrymattercontentandnutritionalqualityofChinesechives.Weidentified

36volatileand183nonvolatiledifferentiallyabundantmetabolitesbetweentheMeJA-treatedandcontrolgroups.

Geneexpressionanalysisrevealed193candidategenesassociatedwithflavorformation.Amongallthegenes,a

totalof2,667DEGswereenrichedprimarilyinmetabolicpathways,includingsecondarymetabolitebiosynthesis,

linoleicacidmetabolism,andphenylpropanoidbiosynthesis.Furthermore,exogenousMeJAinhibitedthesynthesis

ofendogenousjasmonicacidaswellasenzymeactivityandgeneexpressionrelatedtometabolicpathways.Italso

promotedtheconversionofS-alkyl-L-cysteinetoS-alk(en)ylcysteinesulfoxides(CSOs),increasingtheaccumulation
