hewasinsertinghimselfintoatownsteepedinartistic
tradition.Attheheightofthegoldrushesinthe1850sHill
Endhadbeenathrivingcommunity,butasthemineral
wealthranoutthepopulationbegantodwindle.By1947,
whenRussellDrysdaleandDonaldFriendarrived,itwas
virtuallyaghosttown.Thetwoartistsweremesmerised
bytheatmosphereofthece,andwouldmakemany
returntrips.Friendwouldbuyacottage,andinitiateHill
End’ssecondlife:asaninformalartists’colony–an
AustraliananswertoWorpswedeorSt.Ives.
OverthepastdecadeSciberrashasbecomethenucleus
aroundwhichsomuchoftheartisticlifeofHillEndseems
torevolve.Hospitable,sociable,agoodcookandan
enthusiastforotherartistsandtheirwork,heisthestar
attractionamongasteadilygrowinggroupofpainters,
writers,sculptors,printmakers,pottersand
photographerswholiveeitherfull-timeorpart-timeina
townthatremainsastudyin‘pleasingdecay’,touseJohn
Piper’sfamousphrase.
HillEnd’srelativeisolationisagreatbenefitforSciberras,
becauseitputslimitsonhissociabilityandobligeshimto
concentrateonhispainting.Whenafinalreckoningofany
artist’scareerismade,allthevividandcolourful
anecdotesofhisorherlifecountforverylittle.Itisthe
workthattellsuseverythingweneedtoknow,and
althoughSciberrashasmadeaflyingstart,hestillhasa
longwaytotravel.
