inMali,acountryinWestAfrica.Now,therearefewerthanfourhundred.

Whydidthenumberoftheelephantsdropsoquickly?Ontheonehand,theelephant’smainlake,theironly

watersource,driedup.Ontheotherhand,thelandwhichtheelephantslivedonwasoverusedbyhumans.

Toprotecttheelephants’livingenvironment,theMaliElephantProject（MEP）wasstartedin2007.MEP

metwithlocalpeopleandhelpedthemmakerulesofusinglandandwater.Asaresult,thesituationbecamebetter

andtherewasmorefood,forestandgrassland.

However,from2012to2016,poaching（偷猎）andillegaltradeintheelephantsincreasedrapidly.Eighty-

threeelephantswerelostin2015aloneandanotherfifty-oneelephantswerekilledin2016.“Ifthissituationgoes

on,alltheGourmaelephantswillbekilledby2020,”saidamemberofMEP.

Luckily,thevoiceofMEPwasheard.Moreorganizationshavejoinedtogethertoeducatethelocalpeople

thattradingelephantsisagainstthelaw.Elephantpoachinghasdroppedtoaverylowlevel.Thelocalpeoplehave

learnedtolivepeacefullywiththeelephants,oneofthewildlifetreasuresintheworld.
