(67%),married(73%),andbetweentheagesof41and55(57%).Thirty-eightpercenthadat
leastonedependentchildlivingathome.Therespondentsamplewasgenerallyrepresen-
tativeoftheorganizationpopulation.Forexample,55%oftheemployeesinthisorganiza-
tionarebetweentheagesof41and55,55%areCaucasian,and60%arefemale.Although
ourrespondentsaresomewhatmorelikelytobefemaleandCaucasian,wedonotbelievethe
magnitudeofthedifferencessubstantivelybiastheresults.Thesignificant-otherrespondents
wereprimarilytheemployee’sspouse(87%),female(70%),andworkedoutsidethe
home(84%).
Measures
CTuseafterhours.Respondentswereaskedtoreportthefrequency(1=never,5=very
often,i.e.,severaltimesaday)withwhichtheyuseanarrayofCTstoperformtheirjobdur-
ingnonworkhours.OurmeasurewasbasedonBattandValcour’s(2003)measureofflexi-
bletechnologyusebutadaptedtoincludenewertechnologiesandthoseofmostrelevanceto
thepresentsample.WeassessedtheuseoffivespecificCTs:cellphones,e-mail,voicemail,
PDAs,andpagers.Thefivespecifictechnologiesoffocuswereverifiedwiththeuniversity’s
HRdirectorasrepresentativeofCTspotentiallyusedbyemployees.ConsistentwithBatt
andValcour,responsestotheindividualtechnologieswereaveragedtocreateanoverall
indexofreportedCTuseafterhours(α=.72).
Althoughtherewasvarianceinjobdutiesamongourrespondents,whichmayaffectuse
andreactionstoCTuse(anissueweempiricallyexaminebelow),theuniversityhadfirmly
setworkinghours(i.e.,8-5)forallemploye
