WeinvestietheexanteincentivesforfirmstosharedemandinformationinaCournotduopoly
withcapacityconstraints.Weshowthattheincentivesmaybereversedwhensomeequilibrium
solutionsareboundedonthecapacity.Especially,weidentifyaconditionunderwhichpartial
informationsharingisthedominantstrategy.Inaddition,weanalyzetheimpactofinformation
sharingonsocialwelfare.

1Introduction
Inoligopolyliteraturethereisalineofresearchinvestiingincentivesforoligopoliststoshare
theirprivateinformationaboutuncertaindemandconditionsorproductioncosts.Standardas-
sumptionsinthisliteratureinclude:(1)theuncertainvariablecanbeacommonvalue(e.g.,the
interceptindemandfunction)orafirm-specificvalue(e.g.,eachfirm’sproductioncost),(2)firms
mustmakeanagreementoninformationsharingbeforetheyobtainprivatesignalaboutthetrue
state,and(3)eachfirmwilleinformationtruthfullyaccordingtotheagreement.Novshek
andSonnenschein(1982),Clarke(1983),andGal-or(1985)analyzetheCournotgamewithuncer-
taindemandconditions.WhileGal-or(1986)andShapiro(1986)considertheCournotgamewith
uncertaintyabouteachfirm’sprivateproductioncost.Li(1985)investiebothcasesofuncer-
tainty,whileVives(1984)andGal-or(1986)comparetheequilibriaunder
