    Abstract

    Weconductedarandomizedfieldexperimenttoinvestigatetheimpactofdirectcentralbank

    communicationonthemonetarypolicyknowledgeandexpectationsofnon-experts.Between2022and

    2025,attheECBVisitorCentre,weexposednearly5,000participantsfromdiversevisitorgroupsto

    policybriefings,similartothecommunicationatECBpressconferences.Therandomassignmentof

    participantstotreatment,placebo,orcontrolgroupscreatedexogenousvariationintheinformationthey

    received.Weimplementedanewsurveytogaininsightsintoparticipants’monetarypolicyknowledge,

    aswellastheirinflationandgrowthexpectations,bothbeforeandaftertheinformationtreatment.This

    approachenabledustoexplorehowknowledgeandtrustinfluencetheeconomicexpectationsofnon-

    experts.Ourfindingsindicatethattreatedindividualsimprovedtheirmonetarypolicyknowledgeand

    developedabetterunderstandingoftheECB’sinflationtarget,whichprovedtobeakeyfactorin

    explainingwhyasubstantialshareoftreatednon-expertsrevisedtheirmedium-terminflation

    expectations,aligningthemwiththeinflationtarget.However,theimprovedunderstandingofmonetary

    policydidnotleadtosystematicrevisionsintheireconomicgrowthexpectations.Removingpoten
