ThoughlittleisknownaboutCampania’sfirstsettlers,thefirstpeopletosettleinthisregionwereprobablyprehistorichunters,gatherersandfishers.ByatleasttheeighthcenturyB.C.,agroupofItalicpeopleknownastheOscanoccupiedtheregion;theymostlikelyestablishedPompeii,thoughtheexactdateofitsoriginisunknown.IoniansalsosettledinCampaniaduringtheeighthcenturyB.C.

TheirGreeksettlementsbeganasaseriesofsmalltradingposts,butsoongrewintosuccessfulmerchantcitiesthateventuallydominatedthearea.ForafewcenturiestheinhabitantsofCampaniaremainedunderHelleniccontrol,withPompeiiandthenearbycityHerculaneumthecenterofGreekoccupation.DuringthefifthcenturyB.C.agroupofwarriorsfromSamnium,aregionnorthofCampania,invadedthelatterregionandseizedcontrolofPompeii.Rome,vyingwiththeSamnitesovercontroloftheItalicpeninsula,drovetheSamnitesoutinthefourthcenturyB.C.atookPompeiiasitsownallyabout290B.C.
