    13.1ProblemStatement

    Thisexampledemonstratesamodelingproceduretosimulatethestagedconstructionofavertical

    excavationsupportedbyanimpermeableconcretecaissonwallwithpretensionedtiebacks.*The

    excavationisapproximately84mlongby36.5mwide,andthefinalexcavationdepthis23.5m.

    Thewallis1.07mthickandiscomposedofinterlockingconcretecaissonsof26.5mlength.

    Soldierpiareinstalledalongthewallat2.25mspacing,andinclined,pretensionedtiebacksare

    connectedtoandextendfromthesoldierpi.Figure13.1illustratesaquartersectionofthe

    excavationwiththewall,soldierpileandtiebacksupport.Thesystemofcoordinateaxesare

    definedforthisexamplesuchthattheoriginisbeneaththecenteroftheexcavationwiththez-axis

    pointingupward.Thefinaldepthoftheexcavationisatz=26.5m,andthegroundsurfaceisatz

    =50m.
