Baym,whohastermedthisgenre“woman’sfiction,”themassivepopularityofthese
novelsclaimedaceforwomeninthewritingprofession.Thenovelschroniclethe
experiencesofwomenwho,besetwithhardships,findwithinthemselvesqualitiesof
intelligence,will,resourcefulness,andcouragesufficienttoovercometheirobstac.
AccordingtoBaym,thegenrebeganwithCatharineSedgwick’sNew-EnglandTale
(1822),manifesteditselfasthebest-sellingreadingmatteroftheAmericanpublicin
theunprecedentedsaofSusanWarner’sWide,WideWorld(1850),andremaineda
dominantfictionaltypeuntilafter1870.Thecritical,asopposedtopopular,reception
ofthesenovelsintheirowntimewasmixed.Theoreticaloppositionbythosewhosaw
fictionasademoralizingandcorruptinginfluencewasbynomeansdeadinmid-
nineteenth-centuryAmerica,andpopularsuccessesnaturallyboreasignificant
proportionoftheattack.Themoralistictoneofmuchwoman’sfictiondidnotcate
theseantagonists;onthecontrary,manyclericalopponentsofthenovelthoughtthat
womenweretryingtotakeovertheclergy’sfunctionsandhenceattackedallthemore
fiercely.Similarly,somemaleauthors,disgruntledbytheemergenceofgreatnumbers
ofwomenwriters,expressedcontemptforthegenre.
Ontheotherhand,thewomenhadapowerfulally—theirpublishers,whonotonlyput
theseworksintoprintbutadvertisedthemwidelyandenthusiastically.Somefew
