surfactantchemicals.Theycanincreasewaterspermeabilityandutilize

theintermolecularelectrostaticrepulsionmechanismtoremovedirt

particles.Duetotheformofthesurfactantmolecules,laundrydetergent

canexertitsdualfunction.Oneendofthesurfactantmoleculeis

lipophilic,whichattractsdirtandrepelswater,whiletheotherendis

hydrophilic,attractingwatermolecules.Whenthelaundrydetergentis

pouredintowater,thelipophilicpartofthesurfactantmolecule

vigorouslyadherestoanysurfacenotfilledwithwater,suchasthe

objectssurfacebeingwashed(duetothebodyorfabricsurface).Atthe

sametime,thehydrophilicpartrepelsoilysubstances.Itweakensthe

intermolecularforcesthatmaintainthebindingofwatermolecules(the

forcesthatcausewatertoformdropletslikebeingwrappedinanelastic

film),allowingindividualmoleculestopenetratebetweenthesurfaceof

theobjecttobecleanedandthedirtparticles.Therefore,itcanbesaid

thatsurfactantsreducethesurfacetensionofwater.Themechanical

actionofawashingmachineorhandrubbingcancausethedirtparticles

surroundedbysurfactantmoleculesonthesurfacetobecomedislodged,

andthedirtparticlesadheretothelipophilicportionofthesurfactant

molecules.Thiscausesthedirtparticlesstillsuspendedontheobjects

surfacetoberemovedduringtheRinsingphase.
