ThePrisonReformTrust(PRT)

PRTisanindependentUKcharityworkingtocreateajust,humaneandeffectivepenalsystem.It

wasfoundedin1981toinformandinfluencepublicdebateonprisonconditionsandthetreatmentof

prisoners,amidstconcernsaboutaprojectedprisonpopulationof48,000by1984.Withtheprison

populationinEnglandandWalesapproaching88,000andprojectedtorisetoatleast95,700by2029,

PRTremainsasimportanttocivicsocietytodayasitwasover40yearsago.

PRTisoneofthefeworganisationswillingandequippedtoholdthestatetoaccountforitstreatmentof

vulnerablepeopleinprison.PRT’sreputation,builtoverfourdecadesofknowledgeable,reliableanalysis

andpresentationofthefacts,givestheorganisationinfluencebehindthescenesthatfeworganisations

canmatch.PRT’smainobjectivesare:

•Reducingunnecessaryimprisonmentandpromotingcommunitysolutionstocrime.

•Improvingtreatmentandconditionsforprisonersandtheirfamilies.

•Promotingequalityandhumanrightsinthejusticesystem.

PRTdoesthisbyinquiringintotheworkingsofthesystem,informingprisoners,staffandthewiderpublic,

andbyinfluencingParliament,governmentandofficialstowardsreform.Whilstoftenworkingalongside

theprisonserviceandmaintainingcloselinkswithgovernmentdepartmentsincludingtheMinistryof

Justice(MoJ),HisMajesty’sTreasury(HMT),andtheHomeOffice,toretainitsindependence,PRTdoes

notseekoracceptgovernmentfunding.Thestructureandrigourofprogrammesareagreedwiththe

trustsandfoundationsthatfundPRT’swork.
