II.Itistheundoubtedrightofeverysocietytoexcludefromitscommunionandbenefitssuchamongitsmembersasrejectorviolatethoseregulationswhichhavebeenestablishedbygeneralconsent.Intheexerciseofthispower,thecensuresoftheChristianchurchwerechieflydirectedagainstscandaloussinners,andparticularlythosewhowereguiltyofmurder,offraud,orofincontinence;againsttheauthorsorthefollowersofanyhereticalopinionswhichhadbeencondemnedbythejudgmentoftheepiscopalorder;andagainstthoseunhappypersons,who,whetherfromchoiceorcompulsion,hadpollutedthemselvesaftertheirbaptismbyanyactofidolatrousworship.Theconsequencesofexcommunicationwereofatemporalaswellasaspiritualnature.TheChristianagainstwhomitwaspronounced,wasdeprivedofanypartintheoblationsofthefaithful.Thetiesbothofreligiousandofprivatefriendshipweredissolved:hefoundhimselfaprofaneobjectofabhorrencetothepersonswhomhethemostesteemed,orbywhomhehadbeenthemosttenderlybeloved;andasfarasanexpulsionfromarespectablesocietycouldimprintonhischaracteramarkofdisgrace,hewasshunnedorsuspectedbythegeneralityofmankind.Thesituationoftheseunfortunateexileswasinitselfverypainfulandmelancholy;but,asitusuallyhappens,theirapprehensionsfarexceededtheirsufferings.ThebenefitsoftheChristiancommunionwerethoseofeternallife;norcouldtheyerasefromtheirmindstheawfulopinion,thattothoseecclesiasticalgovernorsbywhomtheywerecondemned,theDeityhadcommittedthekeysofHellandofParadise.Theheretics,indeed,whomightbesupportedbytheconsciousnessoftheirintentions,andbytheflatteringhopethattheyalonehaddiscoveredthetruepathofsalvation,endeavoredtoregain,intheirseparateassemblies,thosecomforts,temporalaswellasspiritual,whichtheynolongerderivedfr
