Abstract:Blockchainforensics(theuseofscientificmethodstomanipulatedatatocreateusefulandinformativedescriptionsofthemanipulateddata)takesdatafromtheblockchaintointerprettheflowofdigitalassets.Investigatorsusesophisticateddatamanipulationandvisualizationtoolstoidentifythetravelhistoryofstolenassets.Withthesecapabilities,chainhopping,round-tripping,andallattemptstoblurtransfertrailsbycybercriminalsbecomesmokescreenswithnoeffect.Thispaperestablishesaframeworkforinvestigatingfinancialcrimesontheblockchain,startingwithabriefexplanationofblockchainforensics,typesoffinancialcrimescommittedbycriminalsusingtheblockchain,andhowtheycanbemitigatedusingOSINT’s(OSINT,2022)investigationprocessofdatacollection,datapreservation,dataprocessing,anddatapresentation.Thispaperalsopresentsacommunity-basedapproachtofinancialcrimeinvestigationsontheblockchainthatinvolvesthepublicandvictimsthemselvescontributingvaluableintelligencethatcanbeusedtotraceandtrackcriminalsbyauthoritiesandsecurityagenciesintheglobalfightagainstcybercrime.
