ThePolarCommunicationsandWeather(PCW)missionisproposedbytheCanadianSpaceAgency(CSA),inpartnership

withEnvironmentCanada,theDepartmentofNationalDefence,andseveralotherCanadiangovernmentdepartments.The

objectivesofthePCWmissionaretooffermeteorologicalobservationsandtelecommunicationservicesfortheCanadian

North.ThesecapabilitiesareparticularlyimportantbecauseofincreasinginterestintheArcticandthedesiretomaintain

Canadiansovereigntyinthisregion.ThePCWmissionhascompleteditsPhaseAin2011.

ThePCWMeteorologicalPayloadisaMulti-SpectralImager(MSI)thatwillprovidenear-realtimeweatherimageryfor

theentirecircumpolarregionwitharefreshperiodof15to30minutes.TwosatellitesonaHighlyEllipticalOrbit(HEO)

willcarrytheinstrumentsoastoobservethehighlatitudes24hoursperdayfromapointofviewthatisalmost

geostationary.Thedatafromtheimagersareexpectedtogreatlyenhanceaccuracyofnumericalweatherpredictionmodels

forNorthAmericaandglobally.ThemissionwillalsoproduceusefulinformationonenvironmentandclimateintheNorth.

DuringPhaseA,acertainnumberofcriticaltechnologieswereidentified.TheCSAhasinitiatedanefforttodevelopsome
