Musichasbeenpartofhumansocietiessincethebeginningoftimeasanessentialcomponentof

culturalheritage.Aspartofanefforttounderstandtherolemusichasplayedinthecollective

humanexperience,wehavebeenaskedtodevelopamethodtoquantifymusicalevolution.There

aremanyfactorsthatcaninfluenceartistswhentheycreateanewpieceofmusic,includingtheir

innateingenuity,currentsocialorpoliticalevents,accesstonewinstrumentsortools,orother

personalexperiences.Ourgoalistounderstandandmeasuretheinfluenceofpreviously

producedmusiconnewmusicandmusicalartists.

Someartistscanlistadozenormoreotherartistswhotheysayinfluencedtheirownmusical

work.Ithasalsobeensuggestedthatinfluencecanbemeasuredbythedegreeofsimilarity

betweensongcharacteristics,suchasstructure,rhythm,orlyrics.Therearesometimes

revolutionaryshiftsinmusic,offeringnewsoundsortempos,suchaswhenanewgenre

emerges,orthereisareinventionofanexistinggenre(e.g.classical,pop/rock,jazz,etc.).This

canbeduetoasequenceofsmallchanges,acooperativeeffortofartists,aseriesofinfluential

artists,orashiftwithinsociety.

Manysongshavesimilarsounds,andmanyartistshavecontributedtomajorshiftsinamusical

genre.Sometimestheseshiftsareduetooneartistinfluencinganother.Sometimesitisachange

thatemergesinresponsetoexternalevents(suchasmajorworldeventsortechnological

advances).Byconsideringnetworksofsongsandtheirmusicalcharacteristics,wecanbeginto

capturetheinfluencethatmusicalartistshaveoneachother.And,perhaps,wecanalsogaina

betterunderstandingofhowmusicevolvesthroughsocietiesovertime.
