Abstract
Inthispaper,weempiricallyinvestigatehowsuitabilityconcernsdetectedbytheSSM
inthefitnessandproprietyofmanagementbodyappointeesimpacttheperformanceof
Europeanbanksintheperiod2014-2023.Weprovideevidencethatmanagementbody
appointeeswheretheassessmentofthesupervisoryauthoritiesraisedconcerns,hada
negativeimpactonthebank’sfutureperformance.Thenegativeeffectcanbeattributedto
appointeeswherethesupervisoryassessmentrevealedsuchsevereconcernsthatancillary
measureswereimposed.TheseresultsoutlinetheimportanceoftheSSM’sworkfor
safeguardingthequalityofbank’scorporategovernanceandsuggestthattheSupervisors
seemtobeeffectiveinpointingoutthoseappointeesthatexhibitsevereconcerns.Inaddition,
wefindthatthedesignationoffemaleappointeesbysupervisedentitiesincreasedthebank’s
performancesustainably.Thisresultindicatesthatstimulatingdiversity,intermsofgender,in
themanagementbodiesofbankspositivelycontributedtobankperformance.
