    1SCOPE

    TheNationalBIMStandard-US™Version2(NBIMS-USV2)isdesignedfortwospecificaudiences:

    •Softwaredevelopersandvendors,and

    •Practicedocumentsforimplementerswhodesign,engineer,construct,own,andoperatethebuilt

    environment.

    1.1Softwaredevelopersandvendors

    Interoperabilityofdataandinformationisanabsoluterequirementfordesigningandmanagingthelife-

    cycleofthebuiltenvironment.Softwaredevelopersandvendorsmustdevelopandsupportprograms

    toachievetheseamlessexchangeofdataandinformationbetweenusers.Thedesignandcodingof

    softwarestandardswillallowdeveloperstoefficientlyaccomplishthistask.NBIMS-USV2has

    delineatedtheappropriatestandardstocoverallaspectsofsoftwaredevelopment.

    Twosectionswithinthestandardprovidethedeveloperwiththenecessaryinformation:

    •Referencestandards:Thissetofstandardsprovidesadatadictionary,datamodel,web-based

    exchange,andstructuresandidentifiersforbuildingdataandinformation.

    •Exchangeinformationstandards:Thissectionsetsstandardsfordatamanagement,assurance,and

    validation,aswellasexchangeconcepts;definesthedesignofexchangesforspecifictypesofdata

    relatedtobuildinganalysis;andincludesConstructionOperationsBuildinginformationexchange

    (COBie).

    Thereferencestandardsweredevelopedbyotheralliedstandardsorganizations,whiletheexchange

    standardswerewrittenandballotedbytheNBIMS-USprojectcommittee.

    1.2Practicedocumentsforimplementers

    ThesecondsectionofNBIMS-USV2focusesontheindustryimplementer.Thesesectionsdescribethe

    necessaryprofessionalknowledgeandjudgmentforallallieddisciplines,aswellascriticalmanagement

    systemsandtoolsforthebuildinglife-cycle.ThusfarintheNBIMSdevelopmentprocess,thepractice
