Introduction

BIMProjectExecutionPlanningGuidedefinesafourstepstructuredprocedureforcreatingaBIM

ProjectExecutionPlan.TheGuidewasdevelopedthroughamultistepresearchprocedurethatincluded

adetailedliteraturereview;industryexpertinterviews;focusgroupmeetings;quasi-experiments;

surveys;andfundamentalprocessandinformationmappingtasks.AftertheGuidewasdeveloped,it

wasimplementedoncasestudyprojectstoevaluatetheeaseofimplementationandidentifyareasfor

improvingthecoreplanningproceduredocumentedintheGuide.SincetheGuidewasoriginally

releasedinOctober2009,ithasreceivedbroadadoptionthroughouttheindustrybynumerouspublic

andprivateorganizations.

AprojectteammustperformdetailedandcomprehensiveplanningtosuccessfullyimplementBIM.A

well-documentedBIMProjectExecutionPlanhelpstoensurethatallpartiesareclearlyawareofthe

opportunitiesandresponsibilitiesassociatedwiththeincorporationofBIMintotheprojectworkflow.A

completedBIMProjectExecutionPlanshoulddefinetheappropriateusesforBIMonaproject(e.g.,

designauthoring,costestimating,ordesigncoordination),alongwithadetaileddesignand

documentationoftheprocessforexecutingBIMthroughoutaproject’slifecycle.Oncetheplanis

created,theteamcanfollowandmonitortheirprogressagainstthisplantogainthemaximumbenefits

fromBIMimplementation.
