    Abstract

    GeostationaryMeteorologicalSatellite(GMS)observationsofdiurnalvariationsofcirrus

    canopyandeyediameterinmaturenorthwestPacifictyphoonsarepresented.Thevariations

    incirruscanopyarequantitativelydeterminedbythearealdistributionofequivalentblack

    bodytemperatures(TBB)(10.5-12.5*m,windowchannel)intheranges:TBB*-70*,-70*,

    TBB*-50*,-50*TBB*30and-30*TBB*0*.Thecoldestregionhasa*sharp

    maximumat0600-0730LSTandaminimumat1800-2100LST.Themaximainthewarmer

    cloudtopsoccursomehourlaterat1500-1800LSTand2100LST,respectively,asrising

    theTBBthresholds.Satelliteobservedeyediameterexhibitsawedge-shapedmorningmini-

    mumandaplateau-shapedafternoon-eveningmaximum.Thetimelaggeddiurnalvariation

    ofarealextentofwarmercirrusclouds,andtheoutofphasevariationofeyediameter

    comparedtothecoldestcirrusclouds,isexplainedasaresultof
