1Introduction
Thesuccessofanewideaortechnologyinanorganizationoftendependsonhoweffectivelyinformationflowstothepeoplewhoneedit.Inmanyorganizations,decisionsaremadethroughahierarchy,andcommunicationmustmoveupanddownacrossdifferentlevels.Afrontlineworkermayneverhearaboutthenewidea,oradecision-makermayremainunawareofitspotential.Eachlayercanslowdown,filter,ordistortthemessage.Additionalinformationfrictionsmayarisefromindividual-levelfactors,suchasemployees’beliefsabouttherelevanceorcredibilityoftheinformation.Together,thesefactorsshapeorganizationallearning,thatiswhethertheideaistransmittedandtakenup(Atkinetal.,2017;Bloometal.,2013;BueraandLucas,2018).Thisisparticularlyconsequentialindomainslikehealth,education,technology,orenvironmentalpolicy,wherewhetherdecision-makerslearnaboutandactonnewscientificevidencecanaffectthewell-beingoflargepopulations(DellaVignaetal.,2024;Ruggerietal.,2024;Slavin,2002).
Inthispaper,weleveragealarge-scalefieldexperimenttostudywhatdetermineshowscientificevidenceistransmittedwithinamajororganizationineconomicdevelopment,theWorldBank.WefocusonthedisseminationofevidenceontheimpactsofgenerativeAI(genAI)duringtheearlystagesofadoptionofthenewtechnologyinworkplacesacrosstheworld.Weassignedall511divisionswithintheWorldBank’sheadquarterstotreatmentandcontrolconditions.Intreateddivisions,wesharedscientificevidenceabouttheimpactsofgenAIintheworkplace—asestimatedintworecentacademicstudies—withonerandomlyselectedemployeeduringanonlinesurvey.Tounderstandtheroleoforganizationalrankinshapinginformationdiffusion,werandomlyvariedwhetherwesharedevidencewithasenioror
