Ontheocean,gullsofteneatnearwhales,feastingoffthesmallseacreaturesthewhalesbringtothesurface.Butwhentheresnotmuchfoodatsea,theyspendmoretimelookingforfoodonland.Thecleverbirdsarefamousatbeachesforeatingalmostanything-whethertheyvebeeninvitedornot.

Thefoodisimportant,sinceflyingishardwork.Researchhasshownthatgullswilltakeshortridesonboatstosaveenergy.Butuntilrecently,therewasntmuchtosuggestthatgullsalsocatchridesonland.

In2018,Dr.Shafferplacedatrackingdeviceonafemalegull.Heexpectedthedevicetogivehimagoodideaofwherethegullwentoverthenextweek.Butwhenhecheckedthetracker,hefoundsomeveryunusualresults.

Someresultswerenormal:thegullssixtripsovertheseawereshorter;theycoveredanaverageofabout22miles(36kilometers).ThebirdalsomadetwolongertripsoverlandtoarecyclingcentercalledRecology.Recologycollectsfoodscrapsforcomposting-andgullsareveryinterestedinfoodscraps.Onthesetrips,thegullflewabout67miles(108kilometers)togettothecenterandbackhomeagain.
