blackboardtocalculators,computers,andtheinternet.Yet,fewinnovationshaveenteredourclassroomswiththe

Hspeed,scale,andimpactofgenerativeartificialintelligence.ChatGPT,Gemini,Claude,andCopilot—oncenovel

tools—havequicklybecomewovenintoeverydayacademiclife.Thespeedofthistransitioninvitesnotonlyattentionbut

alsocandorasweconsiderhowthesetechnologiesareshapingteaching,learning,andunderstanding.

ResultsfromAACU’slatestnationalsurveyof1,057facultymembers,conductedinpartnershipwithElonUniversity’s

ImaginingtheDigitalFutureCenter,offerinsightintohowcollegesanduniversitiesarenavigatingthispivotalmoment.

Acrossdisciplinesandinstitutionaltypes,facultyexpressdeepconcernabouttheconsequencesofwidespreaduseof

GenAI.Anoverwhelming95percentofrespondentsbelievethesetoolswillincreasestudents’overrelianceonartificial

intelligence,withthree-quarterssayingthatimpactwillbesubstantial.NinetypercentworrythatGenAIwilldiminish

students’criticalthinkingskills,and83percentanticipatedecreasedstudentattentionspans.Thesearenotperipheral

anxieties;theygototheheartofwhathighereducationexiststocultivate—habitsofmindsuchascriticalanalysis,

reflection,persistence,andjudgment.

FacultyalsoseeGenAIreshapingtheirownwork.Eighty-sixpercentsayitislikelyorextremelylikelythatthese

technologieswillaltertherol
