Ourplanet,formillennia,hasexistedinadelicateequilibrium.However,theunprecedentedpaceandscaleofhumanactivityoverthepastcenturyhavedisruptedthisbalance.Wewitnesstheconsequencesdaily:risingglobaltemperatures,extremeweathereventsofincreasingfrequencyandintensity,thedepletionofpreciousnaturalresources,andthealarmingrateofbiodiversityloss.Thesearenotisolatedincidentsbutsymptomsofasystemiccrisis.

Equallyconcerningisthelossofbiodiversity.Speciesaredisappearingatarateunparalleledinhumanhistory,asilentextinctioncrisisthatunderminestheveryfoundationsofourlife-supportsystems.Healthyecosystemsprovideuswithcleanair,freshwater,fertilesoils,andpollinationservices,allofwhichareessentialforoursurvivalandeconomicwell-being.Thedegradationofthesesystemsisnotavictimlesscrime;itaffectsthemostmarginalizedamongusfirstandforemost,exacerbatingexistinginequalities.
